Onion Juice Hair Regrowth Clinical Study: the FACTS!
Let's start with the facts. Is onion juice hair regrowth remedy a myth, a folkore?
The truth is that there was indeed one onion juice hair regrowth study being done. The clinical trial results were published in the Journal of Dermatology in year 2002. The study was conducted by Sharquie KE and Al-Obaidi HK.
A total of 38 test subjects participated in the onion juice hair regrowth study, comprised of 24 males and 14 females. The test subjects were then divided into two groups. First group received a topical crude onion juice treatment for hair loss while the second group was used as control and received tap water only. Test subjects in the second group were not aware that the treatment given to them was just tap water. Both groups were told to apply the treatment twice daily for two months.
Onion juice hair regrowth study trial results. By the end of the two month trial period, the trial concluded that crude onion juice produced a dramatically superior hair regrowth results than the control group who used tap water only. Specifically, the trial reported regrowth of thick terminal hairs in some test subjects in just a matter of two weeks into the onion juice treatment. At six weeks, hair regrowth was observed in nearly 87% of the test subjects who were treated with onion juice topcially. It was also reported that male test subjects did far better than females in the study. Meanwhile, the control group who received tap water reported nearly zero regrowth.
Onion Juice Hair Regrowth Trial - the PROBLEM !
The onion juice hair regrowth trial results were remarkable by any standards. So what is the problem? The problem is that all the test subjects in the trial were alopecia areata patients. So good news if you are suffering from alopecia areata. But if you are suffering from androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness, like the vast majority out there, then these trial results mean very little to you.
Alopecia areata is an auto immune disorder that causes round patches of baldspots in patients. Alopecia areata is a totally different disorder from androgenetic alopecia or what we call male or female patttern baldness. Pattern baldness is hereditary and it is what the vast majority of the population have in the world.
Another issue is that the number of test subjects in the study was very small, only 38 participants. Also, since then, we are not aware of any other studies that substantiate the same benefits. More studies and research are necessary to confirm the validity of these claims that onion juice can regrow hair.
