Propecia and Excess Estrogen

Propecia is presently the only hair loss pill approved by the US FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness. The active ingredient in Propecia is Finasteride 1mg and it has been proven effective for many men with hair loss or thinning hair.

Although Propecia can generate hair growth and good results for many, this medication has also produced quite a few undesirable side effects. Here we focus on the issue of Propecia and excess estrogen in men.

Propecia is a 5-alpha reductase (5-AR) inhibitor. By reducing the level of 5AR in our body, we are also maintaining a higher percentage of total testosterone in our system which is then converted to estradiol or excess estrogen in men. Propecia and excess estrogen can potentially cause undesirable side effects in men such as weight gain or even gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the medical term for breast tissue development in men and it is one of the commonly reported side effects associated with Propecia and excess estrogen.

Propecia Estrogen Blocker or Anti Estrogen

If you frequent steroid or body building communities on the internet, you will find that Aromatase Inhibitor is a commonly discussed medication used by men to counteract the effect of Propecia induced excess estrogen. However, Aromatase Inhibitor is also a medication for cancer patients so if you are a bit leery of using yet another medication to counter the side effects of Propecia, you may want to look into a supposedly natural alternative called DIM or Diindolylmethane to block or regulate Propecia induced excess estrogen.

Propecia Estrogen Blocker DIM Diindolylmethane

DIM or Diindolylmethane is a natural compound usually found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale and cauliflower etc. According to National Cancer Institute, diindolylmethane (DIM) regulates beneficial estrogen metabolism in both men and women "by reducing the levels of 16-hydroxy estrogen metabolites and increasing the formation of 2-hydroxy estrogen metabolites, resulting in increased antioxidant activity".

Clinical studies conducted by Weiben Zhang and Zhenging Feng reported multiple therapeutic and preventive effects of  diet derived DIM on regulating hormones and even cancers including prostate cancer and high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia. (Details at ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4197384/). World renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center suggested that DIM or Diindolylmethane may potentially be used to regulate estrogen metabolism and even prevent certain types of cancer. More clinical studies are currently underway to establish the effectiveness of DIM.

DIM Diindolylmethane Estrogen Blocker Supplement

Because DIM can be derived from vegetables, no prescription is necessary. There are already many kinds of DIM products out there which are marketed as a dietary supplement to regulate excess estrogens in both men and women. Members in our forum community have also reported using DIM to hopefully counteract the side effects of Propecia and excess estrogens. It is still too early to conclude one way or another how effective DIM is in regulating excess estrogen, but you can follow our hair loss forum for updates. If DIM is proven effective, it will be a very valuable supplement for those who are concerned about Propecia and excess estrogen side effects such as gynecomastia.

Hair Loss Treatments Without Excess Estrogen

Of course, taking one pill to counteract the side effects from another pill is never a real solution. Even though DIM is marketed as a dietary supplement, there is no guarantee that it will be 100% safe for everyone. If you are looking for an effective hair loss treatment but at the same time do not wish to deal with issues such as excess estrogen or other side effects associated with use of medications, then hair transplant is your only option without resorting to wearing a wig or hairpiece. Presently, hair transplant, when done correctly, is the only treatment that can give most people a "cosmetically acceptable" improvement in coverage.

Hair transplants are very natural nowadays when performed under the hands of a skilled surgeon. It can be very effective even for certain people with extensive baldness. Below is an example of a patient result from Hasson & Wong hair clinic who has received only 1862 grafts for his procedure.
