A rare look at massive shock loss from an FUE. (Hair Transplant)
|
Many years back this patient visited the clinic I worked for before SMG. He was distraught from an unusual and rare condition... Shockloss within an extraction area due to an FUE procedure. He received the FUE procedure from a clinic that was relatively new to performing FUE. It wasn't clear as to what caused this however there were some suspected issues.
1. A punch size that was used was greater than 1.1, 1.2, etc..
2. The procedure started around 7am and ended around 11pm.
3. The patient was injected over and over with anesthesia and epinephrine to control bleeding.
4. A previous scar from a strip excision reduced the overall nerve conduction and blood circulation.
Again my last physician was scratching his head and was stumped as to what exactly happened.
I am posting this to show that even in this seemingly less invasive procedure, there are complications that can arise. And with this patient's permission a few years back he asked me to post this to provide awareness of this rare complication. I know we showed these pictures here before.
This is an educational post. Comments are welcome.

The last picture what you showed us was 22 days after surgery. Shock loss was massive. Do you have any updated pictures of this case? Did the hair on donor area grew back? Was it temporary shock loss or it was permanent? How his donor area looks today?

In theory it should have grown back. I really do not know if it did. He did not update anyone. I wish he had though. This was scary.

hairtech_smg If I am reading your post correctly the initial surgery was not
performed by any of the doctors you worked for but the patient came to your
doc to address the situation?

Yes exactly. He first posted something here I believe in 2007/8. He went to a clinic that posts here but not one that I worked for. He then contacted me and wanted to see the physician I was working for at that time... Dr. Harris from Colorado. He drove over and consulted with us to address the shockloss.
