Abstract;Potential activity of herbal extracts on sebum secretion was studied. Among the herbal extracts tested, polyol-soluble licorice extract P-U (product name) derived from Glycyrrhiza inflata showed the most potent testosterone 5 .ALPHA.-reductase inhibition, androgen receptor binding inhibition and antimicrobial activities, which are closely related to sebum secretion. In addition to the findings on polyol-soluble licorice extract P-U, clove extract and peppermint extract showed testosterone 5 .ALPHA.-reductase inhibition, arnica extract and rose fruit extract showed androgen receptor binding inhibition, alpinia speciosa root extract and scutellaria root extract showed estrogen receptor agonists, and sophora root extract showed antimicrobial activity. (author abst.)

This is interesting because its HUMAN sebum secretions and HUMAN alpha five reductase being inhibited, as well as HUMAN androgen receptors being blocked.
Ive been using peppermint oil mixed with PURIFIED water topically for a while now, and am happy with the results after an initial shed a month or so into it. I tested peppermint oil/purified water on one half of my chin for a few months, and it reduced beard hair pretty impressively compared with the other side. Peppermint oil is very cheap, and costs about four bucks an ounce. One ounce mixed with fifty or so ounces of purified water should last a good year.

Some of the other herbals mentioned in this article like arnica root (a type of sunflower) and rose fruit (rose hips oil) can also be had very cheaply. Licorice might have a strong smell, but it was the most anti-androgenic of the lot.

I became interested in mints as anti-androgens after reading about the spearmint tea hirsutism study from Turkey, and the men who complained of no libidio or low libidio after drinking peppermint tea, and the anti-androgenic effects of peppermint on lab rats. Ive noted that peppermint extract or peppermint oil is in the following shampoos: Paul Mitchel LemonSage Thickeing, Paul Mitchell Tea Tree, American Crew Thickeing (in the form of mint leaves), Jasons Tea Tree, Tricomin Shampoo, Tricomin Conditioner, its in one of HairCycle's products, and various "menthols" (which can be and often are synthetics) are in other shampoos also.

I think it might be an effective ADDITION to taking our finasteride or dutasteride. I would not risk going off a proven treatment however, but think this would/should be quite helpful. I'd love to see further testing for alopecia, but realize that probably wont ever happen.

If you google "peppermint and hair removal" or "licorice and hair removal" or "rose hips and hair removal" you will see that many compaines are obviously aware of the anti-androgenic properties of these substances.

My current regimine...........finasteride, peppermint oil/purified water mix, prox-n, I use nizoral a couple of times a week also.

Hope someone else can be helped by this for all my pals in the HM forum. :-)

Finasteride and Dutasteride almost always have initial sheds in months one and two. We just get that with antiandrogens as the lessening amount of androgenic stimulation seemingly gets hairs to collectively go into telogen phase for a short time, but it thickens back up. Its unfortunate, but thats what happens with anti-androgens.

Best...

Saying that shedding is a sign that a treatment is working defies logic. You shed from the drugs and then your hair grows back on its own (despite the drugs). This regrowth is called a "success". That is ridiculous. Of course it looks like your hair is thickening (again), because you are growing back what you lost to the frickin drugs in the first place after your body adjusts to the drugs.

I dont believe an androgen blockade topically will have any noticeable results with the substances that have been mentioned ie regrowth. Keep us updated.

Menthol increases bloodflow and may help to stimulate the scalp.
However you dont want to over stimualte the scalp and make inflammation worse( unless you are using a Dual shampoo to lower inflammation and increase bloodflow). The key is to "drive down" inflammation first topically and then to improve the health/condition of the scalp before stimulating bloodflow (alone).

Shedding seen with dutasteride and finasteride and minoxidil..........

Shedding is seen with dutasteride, finasteride, and minoxidil at first, then haircounts increase over baseline.

Shedding initially is a sign that an anti-androgen is working. Revivogen's maker (Khadavi) warns of a shed (or has to me in an email) when getting on his product.

Peppermint oil/purified water mix makes the scalp tingle, but wont " burn " the scalp unless you use too much or too concentrated a dose.

Peppermint oil is in Tricomin SHampoo, Tricomin conditoner, menthol is in tricomin, menthol (could be synthetic in this case) is in Alpecin, Peppermint extract is in Paul Mitchel LemonSage THICKENING shampoo, Peppermint extract is in Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo, Peppermint oil is in Jason's shampoo, Peppermint oil is in one of the HairCycle products, and peppermint oil and extract is in alot of (body) hair removal creams.

Peppermint was shown to inhibit alpha five reductase in the experiment. Ive tested it on my beard hair and found it reduced the beard hair on one side of my chin relative to the other at three months, and fairly impressively.

Licorice was shown to not only inhibit alpha five, but to also block receptor sites. Rose hips was shown to have some receptor-blocking activity, Clove was also shown to inhibit alpha fire reductase.

You didnt make that stupid mistake to put on your head undiluted peppermint oil ? Obviously you did.

You need to pay attention to what Benji(MB) said and use it mixed 1-2 % with purified water or jojoba oil or some other carrier oil.

Try that and than come back and share your experience again ;-)
Good luck.

peppermint has to be diluted at about a 1-3% concentration to be used on the skin. Pure peppermint oil isn't intended for any kind of use........it must be severely diluted like a 1/40 ratio or more.
