If this does not convince you to take propecia / avodart, nothing will (Drugs & Medications)

Amazing story of identical twins. One which took propecia & avodart at the very outset of his hair loss. The other who did nothing.

The experiment lasted 5 years.

http://www.twinshairloss.com/

Its proof that if you treat your hair loss early with propecia & avodart, you can slow its progress quite a bit.

It also drives home the point of using these drugs while you still HAVE you hair. Once its gone, no amount of these drugs is going to bring them back to life. They are gone for good.

I don't doubt that at all, there was a time when i decided to drop propecia and my hair went to hell, I was hoping saw palmetto could replace propecia but that did nothing for me.

There is absolutely nothing "amazing" about that story. One decided to treat his hair loss, the other let nature take its course.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if the balding twin has a stronger libido than his brother.

I've been round the block with this natural stuff.

It does nothing to save your hair.

The only thing that will is Propecia or Avodart. Throw in Minoxidil 5% and Nizoral 2% and that you are doing practically all you can to save your hair.

i can not beleive that some people will go around advertising propecia when it has been proven and re-proven that it does not work but it only mess up your system

many men now experiencing secondary hypogonadism and early Male Andropause (low testosterone/DHT, high Estrogens, low LH/FSH) as a result of usage, and side effects did NOT resolve after quitting.

Many men have been left with decreased semen volume, shrunken penis/nuts, impotence, Peyronie's Disease (crooked penis), decreased mental capacity and total loss of sex drive, to name but a few. Side effects of this drug are very real and can be dangerous for those that get them, as for the most part they seem to be IRREVERSIBLE and PERMANENT.

Male Andropause, a condition usually seen in men aged 50+, is now affecting young men in their 20s thanks to this drug.

DHT is a vital male hormone and you are playing with fire by messing with it. Finasteride does more than block DHT, it also interferes with:

- blockade of numerous neurosteroid pathways -- such as 5AR-reduction of Progesterone -> Allopregnanolone (via 5a-DHP)

- blockade of 5AR reduction of Deoxycorticosterone -> 5aTHDOC (via 5a-DHDOC)

- blockade of 5AR reduction of Androstenedione/Testosterone -> Androstanediol (via 5a-DHT)

- interference with the brain’s GABA-A receptor, due to depleted Allopregnanolone

After all that why he F.. would you try that?

Hello can you post some evidence that it does not work. The studies clearly point out one thing consistently - and that is it DOES work. Hair count and hair shaft diameter for MPB patients taking propecia increases and then stays largely stable whereas those not on the drug experience rapid decline in both areas.

I've seen a list a alleged symptoms a mile longer than the one you posted. A large scale double blind study on propecia's effect on sexual health was conducted and it turns out the placebo group reported a laundry list of problems far greater than the group given the drug.

I've been on this board a long time and I know how quickly mass hysteria spreads. If you want to see the effect of hypochondria, just post a message here with the title "Propecia Made Me Blind !!!" and watch how many people start reporting blurred vision and difficulty seeing within a couple of weeks. I remember one guy after reading a particularly heavy load of messages one week on propecia related sexual side effects reported he turned gay due to taking the drug! If there's one thing I've learnt its NOT to trust paranoid ramblings but stick to the double blind studies.

Merely reading one or two papers here and there and cobbling together a conclusion is not sound.

» DHT is a vital male hormone

I've been taking it for 7 years. If it was vital, why haven't I had any problems? I was having far greater problems (like feelings of hopelessness and suicide) losing my hair and I credit this drug for saving my life. I understand each person has a slightly different body chemistry and genetics and the drug may not agree with you. But please don't paint us all with the same broad brush stroke.

Hi Freddie555,
coincidentally I am the one who reported serious eyes problem as a potential propecia side effect here ;-)
I am glad to read you have absolutely no problems and I must admit I was almost amused by so many worried people who affraid of side effects of finasteride in past when I was considering taking propecia two years ago. I thought that these problems are only in minds of that people and not in reality, just like you. I have to tell I was almost sure I won´t be the one who will have any problems and coudn´t imagine that will sometimes stop my finasteride treatment. After two pills the serious problem with my eye started and now I have an irreversibly damaged part of my central vission, where I can really see nothing and which can (or can´t) progress to practical blindness in this eye sometimes in the future (wet and dry macular degeneration). It occured in the age of 24! So now I am really not so amused. Keep in mind I am absolutely not telling it had to be caused by finasteride, actually I don´t believe it, and I wish it was only a coincidence. Some doctors told me the the fist impulse could come of propecia (but only by considering the timeline) others refused it. It sounds really incredible to me that just I must be the one of millions who really have some serious side effect caused by finasteride and I still can´t admit it.

Because I am NW2- now with miniaturization in hairline (father and grandfather NW7), I know that if I want my hair to keep on my head, finasteride/dutasteride treatment is the only option right now. I am still not going to give it up! But first to minimalize the risk I have to be insured by asking, inquiring, bothering, suplicating, begging for an answers of ocular specialists over the world, if that f-ing propecia could caused something like this or not. It is really hopeless to know there is a treatment which can keep hair (the twins are great example) and help to avoid that -as you mentioned- feelings of hopelessness and suicide but on the other hand at least in my case can (or can´t) caused seroius health problem. It is really hard not to know the true.

Despite I still think propecia is THE ONLY REAL OPTION how to battle against hairloss with minimum cases of side effects and so don´t be considering my post as a spreading of some hysteria against it.

sorry for my english but I hope you understand what I wanted to tell.

hi paco,

yes I understood everything of what you said.

First I'm not a doctor so take my advice for what it is. I don't see how finasteride could have caused your vision problem. I would more likely suspect minoxidil since it essentially high dose heart medication and might have something to do with blood vessel formation. But again i've never heard of anyone with vision problem on that either.

Why not contact the makers of propecia and ask them if there have been ANY cases of vision related problems while taking the drug in any of their studies/trials or studies/trials by third parties they might be aware of. They surely have a database of many thousands of people who went through the trials and the associated symptoms.

If you suspect finasteride is the cause, there is no point risking your eye sight for your hair. Your eye sight is far too important.

Also check to see if you have glaucoma or any other type of condition like diabetes..etc. It could be just a coincidence that your vision problem showed up at the time you started taking finasteride.

Interesting thread.

Oddly enough, I've been taking Dut a couple of times a week since early 2003. Not really noticed anything aside from the first six weeks or so when I was probably looking for side-effects.

I reckon I still have pretty much my entire mental capacity and sex drive as the day I began taking it, notwithstanding natural atrophy (I'm in my early 30's now, and not my early 20's). I'm still healthy, active, my career is going well and the wife isn't complaining.

I've pretty much kept all my hair at a sound NW2, yet my three brothers (two elder, one younger) are all at NW5 or worse. Go figure!

Dut isn't the answer for everyone. Or even necessarily 100% safe. It's worked OK for me though - to date - and I'm grateful for that.
