Has anyone used Essential Oils for Topical (Topicals & Shampoos)

posted by CF, 18.03.2012, 06:18

» The problem with essential oils(EO) is this: most EOs contain limonene;
» now, limonene is a good anti cancer agent, but limonene upregulates
» intra-cellular cAMP, and cAMP causes a premature exit of anagen phase in
» hair.. So this is bad.
»
» Now, the goal is to find an EO low in limonene but otherwise good for hair.
» For example, thyme (type thymol) should be fine. And clove (stem) would be
» interesting or bay (in both the master compound is eugenol - an androgen
» receptor antagonist).

I'm going to assume you are getting your information from this regrowth.com write up: http://www.regrowth.com/hairloss-articles/growth_and_loss_of_hair_3.cfm

Where they state: Presumably, dihydrotestosterone inhibits energy production by keeping phosphodiesterase relatively inactive and by suppressing various protein (enzyme) synthetases. A relatively high concentration of cAMP may cause premature termination of the growing stages of hair follicles.

But if you read the study they reference (which is from 1970 I might add): http://journal.scconline.org/pdf/cc1970/cc021n13/p00901-p00924.pdf

It states this: "Testosterone carried in plasma reaches the hair follicles, where it is converted to 5a-dihydrotestosteronc, a tissue-active androgen. Since the hair follicles have sufficient 5a-reductase to catalyze this conversion, the intracellular level of TPNH is
presumed to be the rate-limiting factor at this step. The growing hair follicles appear to generate sufficient TPNH via the penrose cycle. Probably 5a-dihydrotestosterone but not testosterone is the tissue-active androgen, since adenyl cyclase in the hair follicles is
markedly inhibited by 5a-dihydrotestosterone but not by testosterone. Inhibition of adenyl cyclase decreases the intracellular level of cyclic AMP. This decrease of cyclic AMP, in turn, will create premature completion of the anagen state"
