⇒ Skin moles led to new research in cell based hair regeneration research. Maksim Plikus, co-founder of Amplica and also professor at UC, Irvine, demonstrated that a molecule called osteopontin which is particularly prominent in hairy skin moles could activate dormant hair follicle stem cells and stimulate hair regrowth. Human trials have been planned to further research and develop this compound into commercially viable treatment that can be administered via scalp injections to promote hair growth.
