Daily Hair Loss: How Many Hairs Do We Lose A Day?

An average person loses anywhere from 50 - 100 hairs a day, give or take. If you lose upward of 100+ hairs a day, this maybe signs of hair loss that is beyond normal, possibly androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness) or perhaps a temporary condition due to stress or your hair going through a resting phase, telogen effluvium.

Daily Hair Loss Pull Test: Ways to Monitor Your Hair Loss

How do we know we are losing over 100 hairs a day? The problem is that we lose our hair throughout the day and there is no easy way to capture or monitor exactly how many hairs have shed during the course of the day.

One thing you can do is the pull test: it is a very simple test which requires you to run your fingers through your hair and see how many hairs come off in your hand. It should be no more than 2 or 3 hairs each time you do the pull test. If you you end up seeing more than 3 hairs in your hand each time you do the pull test, then there may be reason to be concerned.

Another way to accomplish the same is to bend over your bathroom sink with your head pointing down toward your sink, then gently shuffle or run your fingers through all the hair on your scalp and count how many hairs fell out in the sink. There should be no more than 5-6 at most otherwise there may be reason to be concerned.

Daily Hair Loss: Doctor vs Dermatologist vs Specialist

If you are indeed suffering from male pattern baldness, you should monitor the situation carefully and also see a good doctor who is knowledgeable about hair loss immediately. Hair loss can progress very rapidly. There are things you can do now to slow down the progression of hair losss.

However, we cannot stress enough how important it is to find not just any doctor, but a doctor who is knowledgeable about hair loss. Also, a dermatologist does not necessarily mean that he or she is truly experienced in treating hair loss. What you need is a specialist who deals with hair loss exclusively in his practice.
