Finasteride More Effective for Certain People?

In a recent study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Dr. Toru Inadomi from Ichikawa Rio Dermatological Clinic examined the efficacy of hair loss pill finasteride on men with excessive body or facial hair.

DHT & Finasteride Hair Regrowth Pill

Finasteride is the active ingredient in the hair loss pill Propecia, the one and only hair loss medication approved by the US FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia.

Many believe that DHT or Dihydrotestosterone is what causes male pattern baldness. Finasteride is a type II 5-alpha reductase (5AR) inhibitor. 5-alpha reductase is an enzyme that is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT in our body. By inhibiting the activity of 5AR, there will be less DHT in our body and hence, reduces or minimizes the progression of male pattern baldness and even generate regrowth.

Even though Finasteride has been used as a hair regrowth treatment for men for over 20 years, there are still many aspects of Finasteride and its effects on hair loss, hair regrowth that are unknown to doctors and researchers.

Finasteride Hair Regrowth Study on Hairy Men

In Dr. Toru Inadomi's study, the objective was to examine the effect of Finasteride on scalp hair and how hairs on other parts of the body such as face, arms and thighs etc relate to the drug's efficacy.

The study involved a total of 37 test subjects who suffered from male pattern baldness and divided into 2 groups. Group A consisted of 18 participants who were classified as pileous or someone with excessive non scalp hair, such as excessive arm, face, thigh hairs etc. Group B is the non pileous or non hairy group consisting of 19 test subjects.

Finasteride's Effectiveness: Hairy Men vs Non Hairy Men

After administering 1mg Finasteride to both groups over a course of at least 6 months, almost 89% of the test subjects in Group A reported good or excellent results as a hair loss treatment whereas only about 32% of the test subjects in Group B reported good or excellent results. The overall percentage for all the participants as a whole, ie: Group A and Group B combined averaged to 59.5% reporting good or excellent results in regrowing hair or slowing down hair loss from Finasteride.

The results of the study were compiled based on each patient's self assessment at the end of the trial according to four grades: Excellent, good, no change, or worse.

The study points to the fact that Finasteride is clearly more effective as a hair regrowth treatment for test subjects in the group with excessive non scalp hair: 89% vs 32%. Hairy men are more than twice as likely to report good or excellent results from Finasteride than non hairy men.

The study also monitored hair growth on other parts of the body and neither group reported any noticeable difference in non scalp hairs while using Finasteride.

Reason Finasteride More Effective for Hairy Men

The author provided a possible explanation for the trial results. It was suggested that finasteride may be more effective for patients who are subject to a stronger influence of androgen or whose follicles are more sensitive to the effects of androgen. In these patients, higher levels of androgen in hair follicles cause hair loss on their head but on the other hand promote hair growth in non scalp areas such as face or body. Finasteride is thought to be more effective for these “androgen-rich” individuals.

In other words, if you are experiencing scalp hair loss and if you do have excessive non scalp hairs, it is possible that you will have better scalp hair regrowth from Finasteride than those with little or no non scalp hair.
