FUE Follicular Unit Extraction

fue hair transplant dr epstein new york

Follicular unit extraction technique (FUE), unlike FUG, avoids a donor site incision- instead, the grafts are harvested one at a time with tiny 0.8 mm punches which then heal as essentially undetectable dots in the scalp. The result: patients have a hair transplant yet can cut their hair even shorter than they could with the "strip" method, even shave their head, without having any detectable donor site scar. A newer technique, FUE is not offered by most surgeons because it is technically challenging. While FUE in no way makes obsolete the technique of follicular unit grafting, it can be the best procedure for patients who are: young; usually male; keeping open the option of shaving their head; African-American; and/or having reparative work and have a limited supply of donor hair. The FUE procedure can also obtain grafts that can be then placed into a donor site scar from a prior procedure.

To increase the potential donor supply for hairs, some patients can have hairs harvested from other parts of the body that can then be implanted into the scalp where they will then grow. These body hairs such as from the chest, beard, and legs can be difficult to extract in some individuals, and sometimes don't grow as long nor as thick as scalp hairs. However, for patients with a low supply of scalp donor hairs, usually due to prior transplants, these FUE obtained body hairs, along with those obtained from the scalp, can provide extra coverage.

In a typical FUE hair transplant case, 900 to 1500 grafts can be obtained in a single day, due to the extra time (8 hours or so) required for this meticulous work. Many patients will have two procedures over two days, allowing for 1800 to 2400 FUE grafts total. FUE cases now constitute almost one-third of the procedures performed at Dr. Epstein's clinic, enthusiasm for the technique, appreciation of the advantages for the right patient, and the quality of the outcomes is outstanding.

BHT - Body Hair Transplant

body hair transplant new york dr epstein

Body hair transplantation is a procedure designed to restore hair most commonly to the chest and abdomen area, but can also be applied to the pubis, axilla, and any other area hair is desired, to both thicken the existing hair or to provide hair growth where there is none. The absence of hair could be due to genetics, prior electrolysis or laser hair removal, or even trauma due to surgery, burns or other types of accidents. Some patients seek to have restored only a thin amount of coverage or filling in of a limited area (i.e. central chest or pubic triangle), while others desire a thick chest and central abdomen area. Typically, for some of these cases, where maximum density is desired, a second procedure may be necessary.

This is a procedure in which Dr. Epstein has been a leader, performing an average of two surgeries per week. Because of his reputation and unique experience in this procedure, most patients travel in for a procedure. In addition, Dr. Dauer, who has spent time with Dr. Epstein, is similarly able to offer this procedure to patients in Los Angeles if preferred, with patients able to feel confident that their procedure will be performed correctly and yield aesthetic results.

The donor hairs come from the scalp, which typically grow like normal body hair in their texture and other characteristics, but with one exception – they continue to grow as if they were on the scalp – and therefore need to be trimmed monthly. Once transplanted, the hairs are permanent. To provide a natural appearance, the hairs are transplanted as one and two hair grafts, the natural way body hair grows. Other steps taken to assure naturalness include: the careful placement of the grafts at the exact correct angle and direction, the use of all-microscopically dissected grafts that can be placed in the smallest possible incisions so as to minimize scarring, and even the aesthetic distribution of any existing gray hairs into the restored areas. Note that these hairs transplanted into the body are no longer available for transplanting into the scalp if the patient desires to undergo restoration of any male pattern hair loss that may develop in the future, thus meaning that there will be fewer hairs available for this area.

As of now, there are very few surgeons who are truly experienced with this type of hair restoration procedure.

Do not confuse this with another type of BHT where donors from chest or other parts of the body are used to restore balding hair in the scalp.

African or Ethnic Hair Transplant

african, carribean and ethnic hair transplant new york

Hair transplant can work very well for people with African or Carribean hair too when done correctly under the hands of a skilled surgeon. That being said, many people of African or Caribbean descent are concerned about getting good results from a transplant procedure because of certain challenges that are unique to their ethnicity when it comes to hair transplantation. This is understandable because though hair transplants are performed using similar techniques for all patients, there are certain considerations that must be taken when performing black hair transplant surgeries. For example, the follicular curl is very different for people of African or Carribean origin when compared to the caucasian counterparts. Also keloid scarring is another concern for people of African or Carribean descent.

At Dr. Epstein's Foundation for Hair Restoration in Miami and New York, their team of specialists have performed countless successful hair transplant procedures for people with African or Carribean hair texture.

Facial Hair Restoration

facial hair restoration new york miami

Facial hair restoration by Dr. Jeffrey Epstein at his Miami and New York City hair restoration clinic for the restoration of goatee, mustache, beard and sideburns.

Facial hair transplant is a procedure designed to restore hair most commonly to the goatee and mustache regions, but also to the cheek beards and sideburns to thicken the existing hair, to provide hair growth where there is none, and/or to conceal scarring such as from acne. The absence of hair could be due to genetics, prior electrolysis or laser hair removal, or even trauma due to surgery, burns or other types of accidents. Some patients seek to have restored only a thin amount of coverage or filling in of a limited area, while others desire a thick full goatee and beard region. The number of grafts can range from a few hundred to several thousands, with the following approximate calculations: mustache: 350 to 500 grafts; full goatee: 600 to 700 grafts; sideburns; 200 to 250 per side; cheek beard: 300 to as many as 700 per side. Very occasionally, a second procedure may be indicated for achieving very thick density.

This is a procedure in which Dr. Epstein has truly been a leader, performing on average three to four a week. Because of his reputation and unique experience in this procedure, most patients travel in for a procedure. In addition, Dr. Dauer has spent time with Dr. Epstein, and is similarly able to offer this procedure to patients, allowing for the procedure to be performed in Los Angeles if preferred, with patients able to feel confident that their procedure will be performed correctly and yield aesthetic results.

The donor hairs come from the scalp, which typically grow like normal facial hair in their texture and other characteristics, and can be shaved like other facial hair. Sometimes the closest match is with hairs from the side of the scalp, other times with hair from the back of the scalp. Once transplanted, the hairs are permanent. To provide a natural appearance, the hairs are transplanted as one and sometimes two hair grafts, depending on how the natural facial hair grows. Other steps taken to assure naturalness include the careful placement of the grafts at the exact correct angle and direction, the use of all-microscopically dissected grafts that can be placed in the smallest possible incisions so as to minimize scarring, and even the aesthetic distribution of any existing gray hairs into the restored areas. Note that these hairs transplanted into the face are no longer available for transplanting into the scalp if the patient desires to undergo restoration of any male pattern hair loss that may develop in the future, thus meaning that there will be fewer hairs available for this area.

Hair Transplant Repair

hair transplant repair new york

Hair transplant repair and corrective procedures such as hairline revision or hair transplant donor scar repair for patients with unsatisfactory previous hair transplant work from other hair restoration clinics.

Many patients come to the Foundation for Hair Restoration to have repaired previous, inferior quality hair restoration results. FHR's surgeons have perhaps more experience in these challenging cases than any surgeons in the specialty, with Dr. Epstein in particular performing hundreds of these procedures every year, and having authored articles and presented techniques at national meetings. While most patients can expect a dramatic improvement in appearance, the revision work entails additional expense, procedures, and time, and the use of additional hairs, commodities that could have been saved if they had taken our advice to "get it done right the first time."

For most revision patients, the result of the initial hair restoration is a "pluggy" hairline. This is usually the result of work using grafts that are too large, either performed years earlier or more recently with old-fashioned, outmoded techniques. Hair restorations can appear unnatural also for such reasons as improper hairline placement, improper angling of grafts, or scarring of the donor site and transplant areas. Other times, patients are disappointed in the density of the previously performed hair restoration, or had a painful or messy experience with previous procedures. In all cases, patients can take comfort in knowing that the work performed by one of our surgeons will be the finest available, minimizing any future expenses and the need for further revision work.

The techniques used by the Foundation for Hair Restoration doctors to repair unsatisfactory work include scar revisions, revision micro/minigrafting, the removal and re-transplantation of partial and entire grafts that are too large or misplaced, scalp reductions, and laser skin resurfacing. Factors that make revision hair work more challenging, factors which may include scarring, compromised blood flow, and limited remaining donor hair, can all be overcome using these modern techniques. Our doctors have written articles about the techniques used to repair prior transplants.

Eyebrow & Eyelash Transplant

Eyebrow and eyelash transplant by Dr. Jeffrey Epstein at his Miami and New York City hair restoration clinic for men and women with thinning eyebrow and eyelash due to genetic reasons or accidents.

Eyebrow Transplant

Transplantation to the eyebrows, also known as eyebrow restoration is a procedure designed to restore growing hair to eyebrows that are overly thin, scarred, or completely missing. The absence of hair can be due to genetics, prior electrolysis or laser hair removal, overplucking, thyroid or other hormonal abnormalities, or trauma due to surgery, burns or other types of accidents. Some patients seek to have restored full, thick eyebrows, others a subtle thickening, while others to have a scar made less visible.

The donor hairs come from the scalp which, when transplanted into the eyebrows, continue to grow for a lifetime and therefore need to be trimmed typically once a month. To provide a natural appearance, the hairs are transplanted primarily one and occasionally two at a time, the natural way eyebrow hairs grow. This is a very delicate procedure, requiring perfect placement of these hairs into tiny (half-millimeter) incisions that are angled at just the right direction and positioned to mimic natural growth. The use of all-microscopically dissected grafts allows their placement into the smallest possible incisions so as to minimize scarring and damage to already existing hairs.

A procedure typically involves the placement of 50 to as many as 325 hairs into each eyebrow, depending upon the existing amount of hair and the desired size and density. Performed usually under a mild oral sedative, the 2 hour procedure is essentially painless, as is the recovery period. For the first 2 to 4 days after the procedure, tiny crusts are around each transplanted hair. By 3 to 5 days, other than some occasional mild pinkness which fades out by the first week, patients are able to return to normal activities without any sign of having had a procedure. Sutures that are placed in the donor area are dissolvable so there is no need to return to the office for removal. The transplanted hairs fall out at around 2 weeks, then start to regrow at 3 months, where they will continue to grow for a lifetime.

Eyelash Transplant

Eyelash transplant, also known as eyelash implants, is a relatively new procedure that originally was used to treat areas of the eyelid that have no eyelashes due to genetics, alopecia, or trauma such as that from cancer surgery or burns. Recently, however, Dr. Epstein has been using the procedure to thicken and enhance the appearance of the eyelashes, in individuals who already have eyelashes.

The donor hairs come from the scalp which then become eyelashes and they continue to grow for a lifetime and therefore need to be trimmed typically once a month. To provide a natural appearance, the hairs are transplanted one at a time. This is a very delicate procedure, requiring perfect placement of these hairs that are angled at just the right direction and position to mimic natural growth.

A procedure typically involves the placement of 25 to as many as 50 hairs into each upper eyelid, depending upon the existing amount of hair and the desired size and density. Performed usually under a mild oral sedative, the 2 hour procedure is essentially painless, as is the recovery period. For the first 3 to 4 days after the procedure, tiny crusts are around each transplanted hair, and there can be some pinkness and/or mild swelling to the eyelids. By 3 to 5 days, other than some residual mild pinkness which fades out by the first week, patients are able to return to normal activities without any sign of having had a procedure. Sutures that are placed in the donor area are dissolvable so there is no need to return to the office for suture removal. The transplanted hairs fall out at around 2 weeks, and then start to regrow at 3 months, where they will continue to grow for a lifetime.

They are also usually taking estrogen medication which can help in this same regard. This helps assure the longest lasting results of the hair restoration.

Male & Female Hairline Lowering

female hairline lowering new york

Female hairline lowering procedure by Dr. Jeffrey Epstein at his Miami and New York City clinic for women with hair loss, thinning hair and genetic hair problems.

Dr. Epstein is one of the world’s foremost specialists in hairline advancement and treating receding hairlines, having performed nearly 2,500 of these procedures.

The hairline advancement/lowering procedure can lower the overly high hairline whether due to genetics, hair loss, or prior surgery such as browlifts. Most commonly it is performed on women, where the high forehead can be shortened. In addition, it is possible to actually change the shape of the hairline, making it more oval or rounded by filling in the upper temporal/side regions, creating a more feminine appearance. This is a procedure in which Dr. Epstein specializes, performing them on average two to three times weekly, mostly on patients who travel in for the procedure.

There are two techniques that can be used to advance the hairline. The most common, because it has many advantages, is with hair transplants. In this technique, as many as 2400 or more hair grafts can be placed in a single procedure with natural appearing results. Performed usually under a mild oral sedative, this four to six hour procedure is essentially painless, as is the recovery period. These grafts, each containing one to three hairs, are placed in the natural direction of growth, into very tiny incisions both in front of as well as between the existing hairline hairs in order to increase density. Most patients are fully presentable by three to four days with a hat or scarf, and allowed to resume normal activities, including exercise and hair washing, at five days. The transplanted hairs fall out after three weeks, then start to regrow at four months- requiring a total of eight or so months before the results are quite noticeable. The hairs can grow not only in areas that once had hair, but also in areas where hair never grew. The donor hairs come from the back of the scalp, which continue to grow for a lifetime. To provide a natural appearance, the hairs are transplanted primarily one and two at a time, with the finest hairs up front, the natural way the hairline hairs grow. There are few risks with the procedure. The donor site, from where the hairs are removed, typically heals as a less than 2 mm wide incision, easily concealable with existing hair in the area.

The other hairline advancement technique is a surgical procedure that involves shortening the forehead while surgically moving the hairline forward. An incision is made right along the front of the hairline, and sometimes along with shortening the forehead, the eyebrows can be raised up, if desired, so that a browlift is performed. The result is a fine line incision scar along the hairline which typically heals up to be barely if at all visible, plus is typically designed by Dr. Epstein to have hairs growing through it. This is definitely a bigger procedure than transplanting with hair grafts, but can be quite effective and produce rapid results. Most patients are presentable at five to seven days, and the sutures come out at around a week.
