About Dr. Hitzig

Gary S. Hitzig, M.D., F.A.A.C.S. - American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery

While serving as a surgical resident at Cornell Medical Center, in New York, hair transplant surgeon Dr. Gary Hitzig had already lost a significant amount of his hair. He had previously spent most of his summer earnings trying every hair growth remedy on the market. In 1974 he underwent his first hair transplant surgery. The results were less than successful. In late 1975, Dr. Hitzig learned of new techniques for hair transplant surgery from an attending physician at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Institute and had his transplant redone successfully. Thrilled and fascinated by the possibilities of hair transplantation surgery, Dr. Hitzig committed his professional time and practice to hair restoration for men and women in 1976. For the next three years, while still a resident in pediatric reconstructive urology, Dr. Hitzig was also an associate attending in Plastic Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York responsible for training Plastic Surgery residents in hair transplant surgery. During the mid 1980′s Dr. Hitzig ran a training program for Dermatology residents at New York Hospital in hair restoration transplant surgery.

Dr. Hitzig has personally performed well over 30,000 hair restoration procedures in New York, NYC and Long Island. Both an innovator and inventor, Dr. Hitzig has pioneered the use of Infrared Coagulation in hair transplant surgery and recently patented the “Hitzig Linear Punch.” Dr. Hitzig has had articles published in Dermatologic Surgery and the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery on Adjuvant Techniques in Punch Graft Hair Transplantation, Curvilinear Baldness Reduction, The Use of Infrared Coagulation in Hair Transplant and Scalp Reduction Surgery and Linear Grafting Using a Modified Slot Method.

Dr. Hitzig is Board Certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and serves currently as the Medical Advisor for the Board of Directors of the American Hair Loss Council and has authored cover articles on “Scalp Camouflage after Hair Restoration Surgery” and “Linear Grafting” for the council newsletter.

Since 1986 Dr. Hitzig has been a full fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and was the Co-Chair for the 1996 Hair Symposium in New York City sponsored by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and presented by the American Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

In May of 1997, Dr. Hitzig was the featured speaker at the Simposio Internacionale of Cosmetic Surgery in Santiago de Cali, Columbia with world renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Ivo Pitanguy. His consumer book on hair loss titled, “Help & Hope for Hair Loss”, published by Avon Books, has been released internationally.

In 1998 Dr. Hitzig’s patent for the Hitzig Linear Punch was approved and is now being commercially manufactured and sold to surgeons around the world.

ACell Tissue Regeneration*

Recent advances in the world of Regenerative Medicine have been very exciting. Fingertips are being regenerated, organs and heart valves have been cloned and are successfully being implanted in patients. Now one of the leading innovators in the field of regenerative medicine, ACell, Inc., has asked the Plastic Surgeons at Dr. Gary Hitzig’s offices (www.NYHairloss.com ) in Rockville Centre, NY to test the use of their MatriStem product for healing the wounds associated with hair transplant sites. Dr. Hitzig and his colleagues will examine MatriStem’s ability to reduce scar tissue and regenerate hair within the donor region of hair transplant patients. MatriStem will also be tested for cloning transplanted hair from the donor area and the beard and growing it in bald areas on the top of the scalp. In the past 6 months, ACell’s MatriStem has been used on 8 hair transplant patients, one of which was Dr. Hitzig himself.

ACell’s patented Extracellular Matrix (ECM) products are covered by multiple 510(k) clearances and address important unmet clinical needs, providing safe, effective and therapeutic outcomes. Derived from porcine urinary bladders and referred to as UBM (urinary bladder matrix), trademarked as MatriStem™, ACell’s core technology is a naturally occurring, non-crosslinked, completely resorbable acellular biomaterial. A similar “first generation” ECM technology has been used to treat over 500,000 patients with remarkable effect. ACell’s MatriStem products are the next generation of ECM technology due to its unique characteristics featuring a basement membrane surface which is ideal for epithelial cell growth in many applications.

“We are growing new hair in prior donor scar sites as well as duplicating (growing multiple hairs from a single transplanted beard or donor hair) in the bald recipient area” states Dr. Ted Chaglassian, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and former Chief of Plastic Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital and Attending Physician at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in NYC. He further states: “Where we go from here is anyone’s guess but the future of cloning growing hair has just been made a reality in the present!”

We will now be expanding the study by accepting a select few additional patients to work on using the Regenerative FDA cleared MatriStem MicroMatrix. The MatriStem MicroMatrix products are unique in that they fundamentally change healing by triggering abundant new blood vessel formation at the wound site and also recruit to that site numerous cell types, including progenitor cells, which have the potential to differentiate into numerous types of site specific tissues. During the healing process, the injured tissue is remodeled as the MatriStem product is completely resorbed, leaving new tissue where scar tissue would normally be expected, which may also include new hair!

PRP Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Therapy*

ACell and PRP injected into the scalp prior to hair transplantation

ACell (Matri-stem) Suspended in Arterial Blood Serum/PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) to Retard Genetic/Other Types of Hair Loss and Possibly Re-grow Miniaturizing Scalp Hairs.

Much has been written as of late in the use of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Injections to slow down or stop balding as well as to re-grow miniaturizing scalp hairs. Much of the early reported variable successes (Greco1) have been attributed to the fact that there are significant vital proteins (Collagen IV etc.) as well as multiple growth factors (ie: VGRF) that are vital to terminal hairs along with hair survival and enhancement in general. It has been postulated (Greco1) that the addition of ECM (Extracellular matrix) may significantly improve the results.

What Is ACell (Matristem)?

ACell is the by-product of urinary bladder tissue (which has remarkable regenerative properties). The product is stripped of all cells (ACell) as well as muscle tissue thereby preventing graft vs. host reactions (Allergic Reactions) when introduced in humans. The way it works (in wound healing) is by recruiting huge numbers of Adult Stem Cells along with tremendous blood supply to the sight of a wound. It then effectively changes these inactive Adult Stem Cells back into Progenitor Cells (the Active Form) to direct healing by duplication of normal tissue rather than scar formation which is the only method normally available to humans for healing. What is important to understand is that when we are in-utero (mother’s womb), we develop by the direction of Embryonic Stem Cells. Upon birth these stem cells still remain in our bloodstream, however they change to Adult Stem Cells which are inactive.

ACell also provides a multitude of growth factors and proteins necessary for tissue regeneration as well as a scaffold on which to reconstruct the tissue. The scaffold is only temporary and soon disappears allowing the healing and regeneration to be carried out by one’s own cells and tissue.

Why ACell?

Matristem is unique in that it is Bi-Modal and contains a Basement Membrane necessary to attract and propagate both Epithelial and Endothelial Cells—necessary elements for duplication and restructuring of skin and hairs. Matristem works by setting up a temporary cellular scaffold or bridge and then by attracting massive blood supply plus Adult Stem Cells (there are large numbers of inactive adult stem cells circulating in all humans after we are born) to the site of injury where they are converted back into Progenitor Cells.

PRP Platelet Rich Plasma Preparation

ACell also contains more than ample amounts of the necessary Proteins and Growth Factors to reconstruct and copy tissue along with nerves and appendages (hair for example). Recently it has been shown that PRP (as well as, we suspect , the serum from spun down arterial blood) contain large numbers of Adult Stem Cells. By pre-mixing the ACell with either the Arterial Serum (or more easily the PRP in a non-surgical patient) we are skipping the step of waiting for the Adult Stem Cells to migrate to the injection sites and in essence pre-activating the injections. The injection sites serve as microwounds which ACell requires to begin the healing (duplication) process. In our opinion, wounds cannot be superficial, but rather, must be down to the subcutaneous tissue level in order to maximize effectiveness.

Our future studies are focused on comparing side by side (in the same patient with thinning hair) the results of injections of PRP alone with PRP + Matristem. Early results in transplant patients (where it is easier to obtain Arterial blood from the surgical donor area) have shown that when Matristem plus spun down Arterial Blood Plasma are combined and then injected in thinning areas other than where the transplants are placed, there appears to be re-growth of these miniaturizing hairs. The results are still very early but make sense in light of previous reported (Greco1) PRP injection results. We postulate that there must also be some sort of Competitive Inhibition with the Androgen Receptors or interruption in delivery by Messenger RNA for this to actually succeed. We are working with Harvest Technologies (PRP Specialists) to see where this will take us.

Readers are advised to be realistic with their expectations as these are all experimental and unproven at this stage.

Auto Cloning Hair Regrowth Presentation

featured presenter for three sessions at the 25th International Congress of Italian Society of Hair Restoration (ISHR) in Rome, Italy on May 24 – 27, 2012.

Dr. Hitzig is known internationally as the pioneer of the ACell – PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) hair re-growth injection therapy, which is now called Hair Rescue™. He shared his latest research findings and ACell patient studies with hair surgeons from around the world last week.

For the past three years, Dr. Hitzig has proven that the wound healing powder ACell MatriStem. MicroMatrix can be mixed with a patient’s own processed blood (PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma) and injected into the scalp results in reversal of thinning hair and hair loss. Each of Dr. Hitzig’s case study patients experienced success using his and his associate, Dr. Prasad’s formulation and technique.

Dr. Hitzig also presented an update on his groundbreaking auto-cloning work where facial hair is plucked and transplanted for people with limited donor hair on the scalp. In recent case studies, patients experienced improved hair growth viability when facial hair is transplanted in combination with the use of ACell mixed with PRP.

The final presentation of Dr. Hitzig’s focused on ACell’s ability to improve wound healing on old donor scars and stimulate hair replication in scalp donor sites.

he ISHR Congress attracts major national and international hair restoration surgeons from around the world. The purpose of the annual meeting is to present and discuss current hair restoration practices and explore new technologies in the field.

Dr. Hitzig is known for his research and hair restoration advancements using ACell MatriStem MicroMatrix, Hitzig also developed and patented the Hitzig Linear Punch, a collection of extremely sharp disposable surgical punches that make narrow elliptical slots, which are sold to surgeons around the world.

He is the author of “Help and Hope for Hair Loss“and has published peer review articles on hair transplant techniques and is a regular presenter at medical hair restoration symposiums around the world. Dr. Hitzig is a member of the American Society of Dermatological Surgery, International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and the American Hair Loss Council.
